Sandy Phillips - Glad to be back Competing
On the 05 April 2006 British Dressage announced Former British international dressage team rider Sandy Phillips stepping down from her role as British Dressage (BD) senior selector to concentrate on competing her 12-year-old Rhineland mare Lara 106.
Sandy, who was on the team for the 1998 World Equestrian Games and 1999 European Championships, aims to be considered for a place on the team for the 2006 World Equestrian Games in Aachen, Germany, 22-26 August.

Sandy and Lara have been selected to compete at Saumur CDIO, 26-30 April 2006, and looked happy to be back at the Premier League in Bedfordshire today!

BD chairman of selectors David Trott said: “When Sandy took up the role as selector last summer, it was agreed that Sandy would be able to step down if she chose to focus on competing Lara. Her knowledge and insight have been a valuable addition to the senior selection panel and we look forward to following her progress.”

Where are the polos, Lara 106 quizs?

Comments by Kim Ratcliffe as relayed to Jan Milne

"Lots of lovely talented horses showing real promise to the future.
Some tenseness put Pro-Set a close second but Groove Jet showed real improvement after some time off."

Riders and horses had some horrific weather conditions to content with in the later afternoon after a truely balmy start to the day"

News for you!

LINDA ZANG and STEPHEN CLARKE 2006 National Judges seminar
sponsored by the British dressage supporters club

held at Keysoe The College EC Bedfordshire

Monday 3rd April

Official FEI judges Linda Zang (USA) and Stephen Clarke (GB) gave their theories on training and judging using a wonderful selection of UK riders.

Elementary Daniel Greenwood and Destination Roland Tong and Nadonna
Medium Lizzie Murray and Caramasow Georgina Roberts and DHI Dumas
Ad Medium Damian Hallam and Wolke Sieben Gareth Hughes and Sandman
PSG/Inter1 Andrew Gould and Numero Uno Carl Hester and Pro-Set
Grand Prix Laura Bechtolsheimer and Mistral Hojris Emile Faurie and Racit

A fun day of observations and discussion between Stephen and Linda, to a full arena of fascinated judges and BD Supporters club. Both judges commented on the established and correctness of all the horses at each level
Linda joked that the US had better watch out! Linda also pursued the importance of straightness and impulsion with Lizzie's mount, and with Georgina both Stephen and Linda discussed the true expression between the working/medium and collected paces. Damian and Gareth gave polished displays while the Judges marked before and after tests (as they did all day) and discussed the importance of forward impulsion... driven by the leg and seat, whist allowing expansion into the contact, beautifully shown! ...emphasied especially into the downwards transition. Andrew Gould was selected to display the complex half pass / flying change in canter and an interesting debate was shared by the Audience and Judges alike as to what was expected! All good fun. Both Carl and Emile fresh from their trip on the Spanish Sunshine Tour gave dazzling displays on their mounts who have obviously benefited from the early seasons training! Carl demonstrating dynamic Pirouettes and Emile controlled yet expressive Passage. Laura nailed an impressive display of Piaffe on the talented Mistral Hojris, to end what was a thoroughly informative spring day!

Yahoo... Spring is definately on the go, horses moulting and short sleeves yippee!!!

Daily Outings and More!

A day in the life so to speak, where at present cows are your best friend and the sunshine and raindrops feel good! Gambledown is training at present at Green End Lodge with Nz rider Jan Milne in classical dressage and schooling over small fences, whilst completing a degree in bucking and screeching to a halt after running around very eratically!
Due to the fact that Gamble is quite busy with grass and the fact that his hooves won't fit on the Keyboard, he also breaks things accidently... dearest Jasper the Tonkinese, the wise man of the partnership, has taken it upon himself to assist with NEWS and general Diary entries!

Jasper fact... One sneeze or two? a tad snuffly today Gamble fact.... showers mean less baths.... brrrrr!.

Chairman Professor Sandy Love welcomes HRH Princess Anne

British Equine Veterinary Association Trust Horse Owners’ Day
attended by their Patron, Her Royal Highness The Princess Royal
A Seminar held today in conjunction with the Home of Rest for Horses, was attended by their Patron, Her Royal Highness The Princess Royal, who delivered a stirring and concise Keynote Address entitled: ‘Owning a horse: right or responsibility’ .

Responsibility, commitment and energy were just some of the qualities noted by Her Royal Highness.
Risks needed to be taken, she stated, but this was more than out-weighed by the sense of involvement within the family, and the gains achieved by all when the decision to purchase a horse is finally made! A reference was made to a conversation held with Bobby Charlton who also confirmed that buying a pony for his daughter was one of the best things he ever did to get the whole family involved.
Everyone that attended was treated to a cornucopia of ideas and advice, a wealth of knowledge from a selection of experts, from vets to nutritionists to farriers to trainers to Dr's ...including a splendid lunch., in the lovely venue at Wolverhampton Racecourse.

The programme was divided into two sessions.

The first, ‘Buying a Horse’ was Cheered by Brigadier Paul Jepson.

This session included...

Choosing a horse, confirmation and other factors... by Judy Brakewell.
Jeremy Mantell amused us with his pre-purchase veterinary examination facts.
Insurance cover was thoroughly discussed by Guy Prest from KBIS insurance and the responsibilities of ownership was addressed by Rachel Murray.

The second, 'Maintaining a Horse' was Cheered by the Chairman of British Dressage Desi Dillingham.

Can you afford a horse... John Williams.
First Aid for Horses... Nicholas Mills
First Aid for people ...Peter Whitehead.
Ensuring your Horses fitness ... David Marlin
Shoeing... the role of your Farrier... Simon Curtis
and finally, Feeding and Nutrition... Teresa Hollands from Dodson and Horrell

There was a question and answer time at the end of each session

This event was organised by the BEVA Trust as part their remit to provide veterinary education to the horse owning public.

Lets hope for a return next year with an even bigger attendance!
