Blenheim CCI*** International Horse Trials
PIPPA SETS THE STANDARD
Pippa Funnell and Ensign rode into a strong lead on the first day of dressage at the Blenheim horse trials.
The combination was ninth at last year’s European Championships at Blenheim and return as one of the favourites for the title here this year, a title Pippa has won on four previous occasions.
Ensign an 11 year-old Thoroughbred by Mandalus was bought out of racing and started his new career as an eventer when he was eight. “In fairness to the horse this is only his fourth season and it will be interesting to see how he has come on in the year – Blenheim last year was a big test for him and he was definitely green,” said Pippa. “But it’s good to be back and I am looking forward to a good competition.”
Pippa and Ensign currently have 6.5 penalties in hand over second placed Jeanette Brakewell and Jo Stokes Equinox Sidewinder, a British bred gelding by Lantyans Playboy. Jeanette has ridden the ten-year-old for three seasons and the combination was eighth at Burgie two-star and has completed Bramham three-star level twice. “As he has got older he has got more confident – I like him a lot,” said Jeanette. “The course is big and wide – there are lots of big square fences – you certainly can’t be off your guard.”
Fresh from the World Equestrian Games in Aachen with another team silver medal in his clutches, William Fox-Pitt and Birthday Night, one of three rides over the weekend for William, are third.
Dressage, judged by Swiss rider and judge Christian Landolt, British judge Jane Tolley and David Lee from Ireland, will recommence on Friday at 9.30am with the New Zealand combination of Dan Jocelyn and Special Advocate first in the arena.
