The Australians tighten their grip on Burleigh!
Burghley's hilly terrain again sorts out the wheat from the chaff!
The Land Rover Burghley Horse Trials had a first this year when the entire cross-country day was streamed live by webcast over the Internet. It is truely amazing to be able to get live coverage as the event happened globally.
Eventing from all over the world... which is continually becoming smaller!!!
At the press conference, Andrew celebrated a beautifully balanced and well paced ride, whilst honouring his horses and praising the talented Moon Fleet.... who it is said likes to do things in his own way... a knock at the 3rd when the horse chose to ignore Andrew's advice, saw them settle and the horse just coasted effortlessly to the final fence! This horses elegance and strength make him a force to be dealt with.
Lucinda Fredericks stormed around the Mark Phillips designed four-star, stated she had a fabulous uncomplicated journey on the brave little 15.2 hh Headley Britannia and is currently in second place after protesting the time penalties she was given.
She was held on the course before a most discussed fence combination on the course, the Pedigree Posers. Lucinda was naturally frustrated by not being stewarded adequately, and pulled up at this critical point.
The Australian All Luck ridden by Shane Rose, is in 4th place giving the Aussies a strong hold in the top 4 places. Another Aussie, Sam Griffiths and Connigar Bay went well for eighth place... a truely exceptional pair who keep knocking on the door and deserve to come in! Clayton Fredericks who stood in fourth after dressage on Nullarbor, disapointingly never ran the horse which was apparently a decision made previously. This Horse is a real Talent!
Other impressive rounds included Britain's William Fox-Pitt on the consistant Ballincoola to fifth place. Ruth Edge excelled with sixth on Marsh Mayfly. This combination are in great Shape! It was a delight to observe Jeanette Brakewell and the eighteen-year-old Over to You, who's performance mocked his actual age.... a total pro, and a seventh position for sundays start and British young rider Cressida Clay-Reading looked like a potential team member for the future.
The Kiwis had a mixed bag today.
Andrew Nicholson is 16th with Henry Tankerville..... looked solid and was unlucky to pick up 11.2 time faults. 24th Dan Jocelyn and Maraitai flew... 1.6 time penalties. The horse looked fresh when they passed! An unjustified 30thJoe Meyer and Black Andy and an excellent round and also picked up 4.8 time penalties. Bundy Phillpott had a fall and was retired.
The US riders... Rebecca Holder rode Courageous Comet and impressed...10th and unfortunate that she added 4.4 time penalties to her dressage score. Bonnie Mosser also notched up 16.4 time penalties and is currently in 13th place on 55.3. Bonnie would have been in 2nd place if she had come home inside the time.
Bettina Hoy (GER) who had such a remarkable dressage test on the 17 hand Peaceful Warrior, a part-bred Appaloosa, fell heavily at the goose in the water at fence 6B, where the pair were eliminated. The young horse made a small error of judgement and will have learnt from this mistake.
